The Winter Cookout
by Michelle Corrado

The sun is high in the sky, the gas grill is warming up, commuters are donned in their finest Hawaiian clothes while sounds of the Beach Boys can be heard blaring from inside the house. But, why is everyone at the bus stop staring at us??? BECAUSE IT'S 32 DEGREES OUTSIDE!!!

This must be the annual winter cookout. Never known to shy away from a free meal, commuters congregate en masse after the Council meeting for the first cookout of the (Winter) season. It was usually just a few brave (insane) souls that actually wore their tank tops and shorts (Bill, Charlie, Brendan, to name a few). The rest of us would quickly run outside to demand our hamburgers and hot dogs and then dash back inside to devour it.

Of course no cookout would be complete without the summer games of frisbee (with a dropped hamburger), king of the mountain (on top of an ice mound - pretend it's sand) and beach ball. Protocol always called for grad students to be fed first, then seniors on down to freshmen. But, those who had classes at 1:00pm always tried to squirm their way to the front of the line.

The winter cookout was a perfect way to shake off the winter blues and gear up for the Spring semester ahead.
